Step one · 1 minute
Identify where the problem lives
Wear the shoe for five minutes and note exactly where discomfort appears. Is the heel slipping up and down? Does the ball of your foot ache? Is there friction at the back of your heel? Is your arch collapsing? The location matters enormously. Heel slip and arch pain require completely different interventions. Write it down—you'll reference this when shopping.
If multiple areas hurt, prioritize the one causing actual pain versus minor discomfort.

For heel slip: apply a grip or cushioned pad
Heel slip happens when the shoe is slightly too large or the heel counter isn't snug enough. Adhesive heel grips (thin rubber or gel strips) stick to the inside back of the shoe and create friction to prevent upward movement. Apply one strip centered on the heel's interior back. Press firmly for 30 seconds. If that's insufficient, add a second strip slightly overlapping. For pumps with very smooth interiors, rougher-textured grips work better than slippery gel.
Test the grip by walking around your home for 10 minutes before committing to an outing. Some grips shift if not applied correctly.

For arch pain: use a targeted arch support insert
Generic cushioned insoles often do nothing because they don't address the actual arch collapse happening in your specific shoe. Instead, use a thin, half-length arch support that sits only under the arch area—not the full foot. These are rigid enough to provide actual support without making the shoe feel stuffed. Insert it so the highest point aligns with your natural arch, roughly one-third of the way back from your toes. If the shoe feels tight, you may need a thinner profile.
Arch supports work best in shoes with some existing structure. Flimsy flats may need a full insole instead.

For ball-of-foot pain: add a metatarsal pad
Pain across the ball of your foot (the area behind your toes) usually means pressure concentration. A metatarsal pad—a small, cushioned dome—sits just behind the ball of the foot and redistributes pressure across a wider area. Position it so the highest point sits in the groove just before your toes begin. It should feel like gentle support, not a lump. Adhesive metatarsal pads stick directly inside the shoe; insert versions go under a removable insole.
Start with a thinner pad (3mm) and upgrade only if you need more cushioning. Too much bulk changes how the shoe fits.

For friction blisters: use blister prevention tape or gel sleeves
If a specific spot causes friction (usually the back of the heel or the side of the big toe), address it before a blister forms. Moleskin or blister prevention tape creates a protective barrier. Cut a piece slightly larger than the problem area and apply it to the inside of the shoe, not your skin—this prevents the tape from bunching or rolling. For recurring hot spots, gel-lined toe sleeves or heel sleeves offer cushioning plus protection. These work best as prevention; once a blister forms, different treatment is needed.
Replace tape after 3–4 wears or if you notice it peeling. Worn tape offers no protection.

Test and adjust
Wear the shoe with your chosen fix for at least 15 minutes indoors. Walk on different surfaces—carpet, tile, stairs. Notice whether the original problem is solved or merely reduced. If pain persists, you may have misidentified the issue or need a different tool. If the shoe now feels too tight or creates new pressure points, the insert is the wrong size or thickness. Comfort should feel like support, not stuffing.
Keep receipts. Most shoe comfort tools are returnable if they don't work for your specific shoe.
How to know it's working
The right tool eliminates the specific pain you identified in step one. You should be able to wear the shoe for at least two hours without readjustment or discomfort. The shoe should feel snug but not tight, and any insert should be invisible—you notice the absence of pain, not the presence of the tool.

The insert shifted during wear. How do I keep it in place?
Adhesive inserts should stick firmly if applied to a clean, dry surface. If yours keeps moving, the shoe interior may be dusty or damp. Wipe the interior with a dry cloth before applying. For non-adhesive inserts, a small piece of double-sided fashion tape on the underside can anchor it without damaging the shoe.
I added an insert and now the shoe is too tight. What do I do?
You've chosen a too-thick insert for that shoe. Remove it and try a thinner version, or use a half-length insert instead of a full insole. Some shoes simply don't have room for additional cushioning—in that case, focus on external fixes like heel grips instead.
Can I use multiple fixes in the same shoe?
Yes, but strategically. A heel grip plus an arch support works well together. A heel grip plus a metatarsal pad also works. However, stacking a full insole, arch support, and metatarsal pad will make the shoe too tight. Choose the two most pressing problems and address those.
Do these tools work in all shoe types?
They work best in structured shoes like pumps, loafers, and boots. Delicate sandals, very tight shoes, or shoes with minimal interior space may not accommodate inserts. Heel grips work in almost any shoe, but adhesive-based solutions require a clean, smooth interior surface.
