The Right Way to Iron Every Fabric Type

Ironing isn't one-size-fits-all—each fabric demands its own temperature, pressure, and approach. Here's how to press everything from silk blouses to linen trousers without scorching, shining, or stretching.

The iron is not your enemy—mismatched heat settings and careless technique are. Most fabric damage happens because people treat all garments the same way: maximum heat, full steam, aggressive pressure. That's how you end up with shiny polyester, scorched linen, and melted synthetic blends.

The fix is simple: know your fabric's melting point, adjust your iron accordingly, and use the right moisture level for the job. Whether you're pressing a silk camisole, cotton dress shirt, or wool blazer, these five steps will get you crisp results without casualties.

Step one · 1 minute

Check the care label and sort by fiber content

Before you plug in the iron, read the garment's care label. It will tell you the maximum safe temperature and whether steam is allowed. Sort your pile by fiber type: delicates (silk, satin, lace) in one group, synthetics (polyester, nylon) in another, and natural fibers (cotton, linen, wool) in a third. This prevents you from accidentally cranking the heat too high for a silk blend after pressing sturdy cotton.

If the label is missing or illegible, default to low heat (250°F) and test on a hidden seam first.

Step two · 2 minutes

Set your iron to the correct temperature

Temperature is everything. Silk, satin, and nylon need low heat (250–275°F) to avoid shine and melting. Polyester and blends typically require medium heat (300–325°F). Cotton and linen can handle medium-high heat (350–375°F). Wool sits in the middle at 300–350°F and benefits from a pressing cloth to prevent shine. Most irons have fabric-type icons on the dial—use them as a starting point, but always defer to the garment's label if it's more conservative.

Let your iron fully heat up before pressing. A cold iron won't crisp fabric and may leave water marks.

Step three · 2 minutes

Prepare the garment and board

Lay the garment on a clean, padded ironing board. For delicates, place a thin pressing cloth (cotton muslin or even a clean tea towel) between the iron and fabric—this diffuses heat and prevents shine and scorching. For sturdy fabrics like cotton, you can iron directly. Smooth out major wrinkles with your hands first so you're not fighting creases. If the fabric is very dry, lightly mist it with water or use the iron's steam function; damp fabric presses more easily and holds creases better.

Never iron a completely dry delicate fabric—the friction creates heat stress. A light mist or steam is your friend.

Step four · 3 minutes

Press with the grain and use light pressure

Press in the direction of the fabric's grain or nap, not against it. Use smooth, gliding motions rather than aggressive scrubbing—let the heat and steam do the work, not your arm strength. For delicates, barely touch the iron to the fabric; for sturdy cottons, you can apply gentle pressure. Never leave the iron sitting in one spot, as this creates shine and can scorch. Work from collar to sleeves on shirts, and from waistband down on trousers. Pay special attention to seams and hems, using the iron's pointed tip to get into corners.

For wool, use a pressing cloth and steam without moving the iron much—just let steam penetrate the fibers. This avoids the flattened, shiny look that aggressive ironing creates.

Step five · 2 minutes

Cool and hang immediately

As soon as you finish a garment, hang it on a hanger or lay it flat on a clean surface. Don't pile pressed clothes on top of each other—the heat and weight will re-wrinkle them. Let the fabric cool completely before wearing or storing; this sets the crease and prevents new wrinkles from forming as the fibers cool. For delicate items, let them air-dry completely before folding or storing.

If you're ironing multiple items, hang each one as you finish rather than stacking them at the end.

How to know it works.

A properly ironed garment should look crisp and smooth without shine, scorch marks, or water stains. The fabric should feel soft, not stiff or damaged. Seams should lie flat, and collars should hold their shape.

Questions at the mirror.

My silk keeps getting shiny spots. What am I doing wrong?

You're using too much heat or too much pressure. Silk needs low heat (250–275°F) and a pressing cloth between the iron and fabric. Let steam do the work—don't bear down. If spots already exist, they may be permanent, but preventing future ones is all about restraint.

Can I iron synthetic blends the same way as cotton?

No. Blends melt at lower temperatures than pure cotton. Stick to medium heat (300–325°F) unless the label says otherwise. Always test on a hidden seam first if you're unsure.

My iron leaves water marks on dark fabrics. How do I fix this?

Use distilled water instead of tap water, which contains minerals that leave deposits. Alternatively, reduce steam and press with a barely damp pressing cloth instead of using the iron's steam function directly.

Do I really need a pressing cloth?

For delicates (silk, satin, wool, nylon), yes—it's non-negotiable. For sturdy cotton and linen, it's optional but recommended if you want to avoid shine. It's a small step that prevents big damage.

How do I avoid flattening the nap on velvet or corduroy?

Don't use an iron on velvet or corduroy—use a garment steamer held a few inches away, or hang the garment in a steamy bathroom. These fabrics are too delicate for direct iron contact.
