The Hardware Check: Selecting Quality Buttons

A garment is only as strong as its weakest closure. Learn to spot the difference between mass-produced resin and heirloom-grade hardware.

We often obsess over fabric composition, yet the buttons are the first thing to betray a garment’s quality. A cheap, injection-molded plastic button can make a well-tailored blazer look like an afterthought, while the right hardware acts as permanent jewelry.

Learning to audit your buttons is a shortcut to curating a closet that feels substantial. Whether you are thrifting or scouting new pieces, here is how to distinguish the keepers from the plastic clutter.

The Temperature Test · 1 minute

Check the thermal conductivity

Hold the button against the sensitive skin of your inner wrist or cheek. Natural materials like horn, corozo (nut), or shell will feel cool initially and warm up quickly against your body heat. Cheap, hollow plastic will feel room-temperature or slightly warm immediately, as it lacks the density to hold a chill.

If it feels like your phone screen, it’s likely polyester resin.

Listen for the 'click'

Drop two buttons from the same garment onto a hard surface like a wooden table. High-quality materials like metal, wood, or dense corozo produce a sharp, solid 'clack.' Hollow plastic or low-grade acrylic produces a light, rattling 'tink' that sounds thin and synthetic.

Consistency is key; if the buttons sound different from one another, the manufacturing quality is inconsistent.

The Finish Inspection · 2 minutes

Scrutinize the mold lines

Look at the edge of the button where the two halves of the mold met during manufacturing. If you see a faint, raised ridge or 'seam' running around the circumference, the button was mass-produced in a cheap mold. Quality buttons are tumbled and polished to remove these seams, leaving a smooth, uniform edge.

Use your phone’s macro camera if your eyesight needs a boost.

The Shank Check · 2 minutes

Evaluate the attachment point

For coats and heavy jackets, look for a shank—the small 'neck' between the button and the fabric. A shank allows the button to sit neatly over the thickness of the fabric without distorting it. If a heavy coat uses a flat button without a shank, the fabric will inevitably pucker and strain.

Avoid flat buttons on heavy wool; they are a sign of lazy construction.

The Cross-Section Review · 2 minutes

Check for color consistency

Look at the holes of a sew-through button. Is the color the same on the inside of the hole as it is on the surface? If the surface is dyed but the core is white or translucent, the button is cheap plastic with a surface coating that will eventually chip and fade. Authentic horn and wood are uniform throughout.

Scratches on the surface of these buttons reveal the 'true' color underneath.

Heft the hardware

In your palm, a quality button should have noticeable gravity. Metal buttons should feel dense, not like lightweight aluminum. If the button feels like it might float away, it lacks the material integrity required for long-term wear. Density equals durability.

Compare the weight of a suspect button against a known high-quality button from a vintage piece.

How to know it works.

Your buttons should feel like an integrated part of the garment, not an accessory added as an afterthought. If you find a coat with perfect fabric but plastic buttons, don't walk away—simply budget for a set of horn or corozo replacements.

Can I replace buttons myself?

Absolutely. It is the single most effective way to 'upgrade' a garment. You only need a needle, matching thread, and a steady hand.

Are metal buttons always better?

Not necessarily. Metal can be heavy and snag delicate fabrics. Ensure the metal is smooth and free of sharp burrs.
