Step one · 20 minutes
Audit what you actually wear
Pull out everything you've worn in the last 30 days. Don't think—just grab. Lay it all out. This pile is your real wardrobe, regardless of what else hangs in your closet. Notice the colors, silhouettes, and fabrics that dominate. These are your defaults for a reason. They work with your body, your schedule, and your taste. Everything else is noise.

Step two · 30 minutes
Identify your color palette
Look at your 30-day pile. Pick 2–3 neutral base colors (black, navy, gray, white, beige, olive—whatever dominates your rotation). Then choose 2–3 accent colors that appear repeatedly or that you reach for on purpose. This isn't about trend colors or what you think you should like. It's about what you've already proven works for you. Your capsule will be built around these 4–6 colors.
Write them down. Literally. You'll use this list when shopping to stay disciplined.
Step three · 45 minutes
Map your weekly uniform
Think about your week: How many days do you work in an office? How many are casual? Do you exercise? Go out at night? For each context, identify 1–2 outfit templates you'd wear on repeat. An office template might be: trousers + blazer + neutral top. A weekend template might be: jeans + sweater + sneakers. You're not creating outfits; you're creating frameworks that pieces can rotate through. Aim for 4–5 templates total.
Be honest about what your week actually looks like, not what you wish it looked like. A capsule built on fantasy is useless.

List the core pieces you need
Based on your templates and color palette, write down the specific garments that would anchor each outfit. You need maybe 2–3 pairs of trousers, 2–3 pairs of jeans, 3–4 neutral tops, 1–2 blazers, 1–2 sweaters, and shoes for each context (work, casual, athletic, evening). Don't buy yet. Just list what would make your templates work. This is your shopping blueprint—it prevents impulse buying and keeps you focused on actual gaps.
Separate 'need immediately' from 'can wait.' If you already own a functional blazer, don't replace it until it actually fails.

Shop with intention (or don't)
Before buying anything new, check what you already own against your list. You probably have more than you think. Only purchase items that fill genuine gaps—pieces that will work with at least three other items on your list and fit into your color palette. Quality matters more than quantity here. One well-fitting pair of trousers you'll wear 40 times beats five pairs you'll wear occasionally. Try things on. If it doesn't fit perfectly or feel good, it doesn't belong in a capsule.
Set a budget before you start. A functional capsule doesn't require spending thousands. It requires spending intentionally.

Organize for visibility and rotation
Arrange your capsule so you can see everything. Hang items by category (trousers together, sweaters together) and within each category, arrange by color. This takes 10 seconds to find a navy sweater instead of 10 minutes. You'll wear pieces more often when they're visible and accessible. As you wear things, rotate them to the front. This natural rotation shows you what's working and what's sitting unused—your signal to reassess in three months.
Take a photo of your organized capsule. It's a reference when you're packing, traveling, or second-guessing a purchase.
How to know your capsule actually works
A successful capsule wardrobe reduces decision fatigue, cuts down on laundry cycles, and eliminates the 'I have nothing to wear' feeling. You should be able to grab any top and any bottom and have them work together. You should reach for the same pieces repeatedly without boredom.
