Pack Your Accessories Without the Damage
Travel doesn't have to mean arriving with tangled chains and crushed hats. These practical methods keep your accessories intact from suitcase to destination.
5 min read · IrisAccessories are the first things to suffer in transit. Necklaces tangle into impossible knots, delicate earrings scratch against hard surfaces, and silk scarves wrinkle beyond recognition. The difference between arriving with your accessories intact and arriving with a travel disaster isn't luck—it's method.
This guide walks you through five specific packing techniques that work whether you're traveling for a weekend or a month. Most require items you already have at home.
Jewelry doesn't need expensive organizers—it needs separation and cushioning.
What you'll need.
- 01Ziplock bags or small envelopes
- 02Paper towel tubes or cardboard tubes
- 03Tissue paper
- 04Small foam pieces or cork
- 05Packing cubes
- 06Dust bags or clean pillowcases
- 07Ring holder or small jewelry box
Step one · 1 minute
Separate jewelry by type
Before packing anything, sort your jewelry into categories: necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings. This prevents the chain-tangle nightmare that makes unpacking miserable. Keep delicate pieces separate from heavier metals that can scratch. If you're bringing statement jewelry, pack it last so it sits on top and won't be crushed.
Use small ziplock bags or coin envelopes for each category. Label them if you're packing multiple days' worth.
Step two · 2 minutes
Wrap necklaces individually
Lay each necklace flat and wrap it loosely around a small cardboard tube (paper towel roll works), or coil it gently and secure with a small piece of tape. This prevents chains from knotting with each other. For longer necklaces, use a straw or pen as the center point and wrap around it. The key is keeping each chain isolated and preventing it from sliding around during transport.
If you don't have cardboard tubes, wrap necklaces around a playing card or business card instead.
Step three · 2 minutes
Cushion earrings and rings
Place stud earrings through a small piece of foam, cork, or even a folded tissue. This keeps the posts from bending and protects the backs. For drop earrings, wrap each pair separately in tissue and place in a small box or pouch. Rings should sit in individual compartments—use a ring holder, or create one by rolling socks and placing rings in the center of each roll.
A small pill organizer or jewelry box with compartments is ideal for earrings and rings. If traveling light, use a clean eyeglass case.
Step four · 2 minutes
Roll scarves and delicate fabrics
Never fold silk scarves tightly. Instead, roll them loosely and place each in its own small pouch or pillowcase. This prevents creasing and keeps them from sliding around. For lightweight scarves, you can roll them around a cardboard tube as well. Keep delicate accessories away from heavier items that might compress them.
Pack rolled scarves along the inside edges of your suitcase, where they're less likely to be crushed by weight shifting.
Step five · 2 minutes
Secure bags and structured pieces
Stuff clutches and small bags with tissue paper or socks to help them maintain their shape. Place them in a separate compartment or packing cube so they're not crushed by clothing. For structured handbags, pack them last and place them on top of other items. If you have a garment bag, use it for your most precious bags.
Wrap bags in dust bags or clean pillowcases to prevent them from rubbing against other items and getting scuffed.
Step six · 1 minute
Pack strategically in your suitcase
Place all jewelry pouches and small accessory bags in a dedicated packing cube or toiletry bag. Position this cube in the center of your suitcase, surrounded by soft clothing like sweaters or underwear that will cushion it. Keep heavy items like shoes away from delicate accessories. The goal is creating a buffer zone so nothing shifts violently during travel.
If you're checking luggage, place your most precious accessories in your carry-on instead.
How to know it works
When you unpack at your destination, your accessories should look exactly as they did when you packed them. No tangled chains, no scratches, no wrinkles. If something isn't right, the fix is usually simple—you just need a bit more separation or cushioning next time.
Questions at the mirror.
My necklaces still tangle even when wrapped separately. What am I doing wrong?
The wrapping is probably too loose or the necklaces are moving around during transit. Try securing the wrap with a small piece of tape so it doesn't unravel, or place each wrapped necklace in its own small ziplock bag for extra containment.
I don't have packing cubes. Do I really need them?
No. You can achieve the same effect by grouping all accessories together in a toiletry bag or even a clean pillowcase, then surrounding that with soft clothing. The principle is the same: containment and cushioning.
How do I pack delicate costume jewelry without it getting damaged?
Treat costume jewelry with the same care as fine jewelry. The wrapping and separation methods work just as well. The main difference is that costume pieces may be more prone to tarnishing, so keep them dry and avoid humidity by storing them in a sealed pouch.
Should I pack jewelry in my carry-on or checked luggage?
Carry-on is always safer for valuable or sentimental pieces. Checked luggage gets tossed around more aggressively. For everyday accessories, either works as long as you follow these packing methods.
