A dress shirt is only as good as its fabric. We'll walk you through the weaves, blends, and finishes that actually matter—and how to keep them looking crisp.
5 min read · IrisMost men buy dress shirts without thinking about what they're actually made of. They see the price tag and the color, try it on, and move on. This is how you end up with a closet full of shirts that pill, fade, shrink, or lose their shape after three washes.
The fabric is where everything starts. It determines how the shirt feels, how long it lasts, how much you'll sweat in it, and what it costs to maintain. Spend five minutes learning the difference between cotton types, weave structures, and blends, and you'll make smarter purchases for the next decade.
A tight, even weave is the single best indicator that a shirt will hold up to regular wear and washing.

Check the fiber content
Look at the tag. You want 100% cotton, or a cotton-dominant blend (at least 80% cotton). Cotton breathes, absorbs moisture, and softens with age. Polyester blends reduce wrinkles but trap heat and can feel plasticky against skin. If the shirt is 100% cotton, it will wrinkle more—that's the trade-off for comfort and longevity.
Avoid anything below 80% cotton unless you're specifically buying a travel shirt that needs minimal ironing.

Understand the three main cotton types
Pima cotton is long-staple, soft, and durable—it's what premium brands use. Egyptian cotton is similar but sometimes overhyped in marketing. Standard upland cotton is fine for everyday shirts but shorter fibers mean more pilling and faster wear. Supima is a trademarked type of Pima. When shopping, look for 'Pima,' 'Egyptian,' or 'long-staple' on the label. These cost more upfront but outlast cheaper cottons by years.
Pima and Egyptian cottons take dye better and hold color longer than upland cotton.

Recognize weave types and what they mean
Poplin is tight and smooth—the standard for dress shirts, crisp and formal. Oxford cloth is looser and more textured, casual but durable. Twill has diagonal ribs and drapes well. Herringbone is a patterned variation of twill. Each weave affects how the shirt looks, feels, and wears. A tight poplin will last longer than a loose weave, but loose weaves breathe better in heat. Match the weave to your climate and dress code.
Run your thumb over the fabric. A tight, even weave feels smooth and dense. Loose weaves feel more open and textured.

Spot finishes that add durability—and cost
Some shirts have special finishes applied to reduce wrinkles or add softness. 'Non-iron' or 'easy-care' finishes use resin coatings that flatten wrinkles but can feel stiff and eventually wear off. 'Sanforized' means the fabric has been pre-shrunk, so it won't shrink in the wash. 'Mercerized' cotton has been chemically treated to absorb dye better and feel smoother. These finishes cost extra but solve real problems. Non-iron is worth it if you travel or hate ironing. Sanforized is worth it if you've had shrinking issues.
Non-iron shirts lose their finish after 50+ washes. Plan to replace them or accept that they'll wrinkle normally eventually.

Establish a washing routine that extends life
Wash in cold water with similar colors. Use a gentle cycle or hand-wash for premium shirts. Turn the shirt inside-out to reduce fading and pilling on the visible side. Skip the dryer—air dry or hang-dry. Heat damages cotton fibers and causes shrinkage. Iron on medium heat while slightly damp, or use a steamer. Wash less frequently than you think; a shirt worn once can be worn again before washing. This routine adds years to a good shirt.
Hang your shirt immediately after washing to minimize wrinkles and reduce ironing time.

Know when to replace, not repair
If the collar or cuffs are fraying, the fabric is pilling heavily, or the seams are separating, the shirt is reaching the end of its life. Small holes can be patched, but widespread wear means it's time to retire it. A well-made Pima cotton shirt can last 5–10 years with proper care. A cheaper upland cotton shirt might last 2–3 years. This is why spending more on fabric quality actually saves money.
Keep a retiring shirt for yard work or sleeping. Don't throw it away immediately.
How to know you've chosen well
A good dress shirt fabric feels substantial but soft, has a tight and even weave, and is made from long-staple cotton or a high-cotton blend. After washing, it should hold its shape, not shrink noticeably, and age gracefully rather than pill or fade.

My shirt shrank after the first wash. What went wrong?
You likely used hot water or the dryer. Unsanforized cotton shrinks 3–5% in heat. Check the tag next time—if it doesn't say 'sanforized' or 'pre-shrunk,' use cold water and air dry. Some premium brands intentionally leave cotton unsanforized for a softer feel, so read the care instructions carefully.
What's the difference between 'non-iron' and 'easy-care'?
'Non-iron' usually means a permanent resin finish that resists wrinkles even after washing. 'Easy-care' is vaguer and might just mean the fabric is naturally wrinkle-resistant due to its weave or blend. Non-iron is more effective but stiffens over time. Easy-care is gentler but requires more ironing.
Is a cotton-polyester blend actually worse than 100% cotton?
Not worse—just different. A 65/35 cotton-polyester blend wrinkles less, dries faster, and costs less. But it doesn't breathe as well and can feel less comfortable in heat. For everyday work shirts, a blend is practical. For dress occasions or hot climates, 100% cotton is better.
Why do some shirts pill and others don't?
Pilling happens when short fibers break off and ball up on the surface. Low-quality cotton with short fibers pills more. Tight weaves pill less because fibers are locked in place. Friction (rubbing against bags, arms, or other fabric) causes pilling. Higher-quality Pima cotton pills less than upland cotton.
